Mandy Jackson-Beverly: I Want To Live In A Fantasy World

I’m hoping to wake up tomorrow in a new world. Yep, my fantasy world, where chocolate and ice cream are calorie-free, same goes for pasta, which in my make believe world will be extremely high in protein, just like coffee with half and half and brown sugar.

Tomorrow, when I switch on my computer and read the news it will be good news. Yes, folks, those in power will engage in intelligent, fact based, logical, discussions. They’ll make decisions based on what’s best for all people, they won’t care about getting reelected, because they’re not out to be professional politicians, but rather honest citizens who want the best for their next door neighbors.

Our weather patterns will be seasonal once again, thanks to leaders all over the world listening to scientific minds and making drastic changes to reduce our carbon footprint. Ice will stop melting, fires and flooding will be marginal, and children will be able to breathe safely in our cities once again. And rivers won’t run filthy with contaminated runoff, because our leaders will realize how foolish they were thinking that coal was clean. Goodness, how silly.

High quality education will be presented in an inspiring way. Teaching to the test will be a thing of the past. College and university admission departments won’t be interested in seeing Advanced Placement class results from high school students, but rather the quality of their communication, research, and writing skills.

There won’t be any elementary, middle school, high school, or college students sleeping in libraries, cars, or on the streets because they can’t afford housing, food and education. Great education will be affordable to all. And classes like woodwork, cooking, sewing, and metalwork will once again be taught in high schools. Goods will be made right here in America once again, and that means more jobs for people who live here and need work.

Our new leaders will be smart and humble. They’ll understand that for a country to run smoothly we need workers of all kinds. That’s so clever. Our leaders will look out for every one of us. Why? Because that’s what good leaders do. Duh…

Health care, yes, caring about our health will be the norm for all. No one who represents a community would want anything less, because a healthy, educated community can make educated decisions — based on logic, based on good healthy choices. We want that, don’t we?

And just like that country down under that changed their silly gun laws because too many innocent people had been killed — we changed our gun laws too. Our leaders chose to do what is right for the people rather than being afraid of losing their jobs or being re-elected. They won’t be bought by big scary organizations bribing them with big, dirty donations.

But even in a perfect world, there will be times when things get bumpy. We need bumps to keep us from getting too comfortable, they remind us to use our brains. Humans are problem solvers, we have an intrinsic need to learn, to discover, to survive. I’ll take little bumps any day, but I’m really sick of stupidity, greed and people in leadership texting pics of their goods — turning them into an overnight front page must read.

Let’s all grow up, we’ve got a planet to save and we can’t do it if we’re not healthy and educated. I’m tired of dreaming about people in leadership, in any party, using common sense — seeing that some things are blatantly right and wrong. Sick of reading about grown men and women in congress unable to partake in educated, logical rhetoric. Just stop it! Take a good, long, look at yourselves. You’ve become lost in party nonsense and forgotten about us, the people. Yeah — your supporters who voted you into a position where we thought you could help us. We gave you your voice — remember? We trusted you.

Darn, I was hoping to stay in my fantasy world, but it’s not going to work. I look out the window at the dry ground and remember that it hasn’t rained in a long, long, time. Bills are waiting to be paid on the kitchen table, strangers are on the streets somewhere carrying automatic weapons, children still sleep on the streets with hungry tummies, racism exists, people are getting tortured, others can’t afford health care and teachers are scheduled to teach AP classes — me included.

Just wake up people. Please?
